初夢 / Hatsuyume
1 June 2019

Hatsuyume is a series of images that aim to capture the culture of Japan’s First Dream of the Year in a surreal trance. Inspired by the Japanese proverb ‘Ichi fuji ni taka san nasubi’ which translates to ‘First dream: Fuji, hawks, and eggplants’ the images seek to metaphorically convey people’s dreams and hopes for a prosperous new year.

Each photograph encodes symbols of this Japanese custom in a dreamlike language. The use of the red flash distorts natural phenomena and combines artificial light with natural light. The colour red not only resembles aspects of Japan’s national colours, but also adds to the dreamlike quality of the work and ties all images into a narrative that allows multiple angles.
